The project

The Renaturalisation Project for de la Libertad and Blas Infante avenues, commonly known as the Green Corridor, is the first initiative within an ambitious programme of urban regeneration, economic development, sustainable mobility and social inclusion included in the “Reconnecting Alhaurín” Integrated Action Plan, which the Town Council will implement with the €8,961,978 it has been awarded through European EDIL funding.

The project, with an investment of approximately €1.24 million (€1,241,270), financed through European and municipal funds, includes the use of construction materials with high thermal reflectance and low heat-absorption capacity. It will also incorporate innovative materials designed to optimise the use of irrigation water in landscaped areas and reduce evaporation compared with conventional surface irrigation systems.

De la Libertad and Blas Infante avenues have become an important commercial corridor, and one of the project’s main objectives is therefore to make them more comfortable and welcoming for pedestrians. The introduction of landscaped areas and spaces for people to sit and spend time, without reducing the number of parking spaces, will help create visual, acoustic and environmental buffers between pedestrians and vehicle traffic.

Furthermore, in a context of increasingly extreme temperatures, reducing heat and creating climate shelters are among the key objectives shared by public authorities in order to improve quality of life and mitigate the effects of climate change.

The Green Corridor will become one of the first key elements in the gradual transformation of Alhaurín el Grande’s urban area into an environmental corridor connecting the Sierra with the Guadalhorce Valley.

Ultimately, the aim is to lay the foundations for a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient model of urban development, better equipped to meet the challenges of global warming.
