This autumn, Alhaurín el Grande Town Council will begin work on Eje Verde (Green Corridor), a project that will transform the Southern Bypass into a major sustainable urban corridor.

The project, with an investment of €1.2 million funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the EDIL Plan, together with municipal funding, will regenerate Blas Infante and de la Libertad avenues through new green spaces, pedestrian areas and innovative water-saving solutions.

Alhaurín el Grande Town Council has unveiled the Eje Verde (Green Corridor) project, one of the most significant urban development initiatives to be undertaken by the municipality in the coming months. The project will bring about a major transformation of the existing Southern Bypass and the entire upper area of the town.

Scheduled to begin this autumn, the project forms part of Alhaurín el Grande Town Council’s EDIL Integrated Action Plan and is co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), under Spain’s Multi-Regional Programme 2021–2027.

An urban transformation to create more space for people

During his address, the Mayor stressed that the Green Corridor is “one of the most important projects this Town Council will undertake over the coming months”, adding that it will mark “a turning point in the appearance of the municipality and in the quality of life of our residents”.

Bermúdez explained that the project will transform an area that has until now been designed mainly for road traffic into a much more welcoming, accessible and attractive urban corridor. “The Green Corridor is not simply about improving the appearance of an avenue. It goes much further than that. We are reclaiming urban space for people, creating new places for walking, meeting and spending time together,” he said.

The project includes the creation of new green areas, the planting of trees and other vegetation, the installation of new street furniture, improvements to existing infrastructure, and the development of more comfortable and safer pedestrian routes. These measures will promote universal accessibility and enable residents of all ages to enjoy the public space.

The Mayor also highlighted that a more attractive urban environment will help stimulate economic activity in this part of the municipality, benefiting local shops, hospitality businesses and nearby residential areas. “We are investing in quality of life, sustainability and the future of Alhaurín el Grande,” he said.

An initiative integrated into the implementation of European funding

For her part, Councillor for Public Works Teresa Sánchez recalled that the project forms part of the extensive investment programme funded through European funding secured by the Town Council. The grant, worth close to €9 million, has already made it possible to carry out major projects such as the redevelopment of Ollerías Street and is currently funding the construction of the Arquímedes Building.

These projects will be followed by the implementation of the Green Corridor, which will regenerate Blas Infante and de la Libertad avenues through the creation of extensive landscaped areas designed to improve residents’ wellbeing and mitigate the impact of high temperatures during the summer months. “We want to give this area a greener, more people-friendly character and create spaces that are much more welcoming for pedestrians,” the councillor explained.

Innovation for efficient water use

One of the project’s most innovative features, as explained by the Councillor for Public Works, will be the introduction of landscaping and irrigation systems designed to minimise water consumption. The new planters will incorporate a water-reserve system that will help maintain the moisture levels required by the plants while significantly reducing evaporation and replacing the existing sprinkler irrigation systems with much more efficient solutions.

“In addition, the entire system will be equipped with monitoring technology to track water consumption and optimise its use, helping us move towards a more sustainable model for managing water resources,” Teresa Sánchez said.

Public participation throughout the project

It was also announced that, in the coming weeks, the Town Council will launch a dedicated website for the Green Corridor, where residents will be able to learn more about the project, access up-to-date information on its progress, and submit proposals and suggestions to help improve the initiative.

The aim is to encourage public participation and maintain direct communication with residents throughout the implementation process.

The most significant urban transformation in recent years

During his address, Anthony Bermúdez announced that the Green Corridor will be one of the projects presented by the Town Council over the coming weeks as part of an ambitious investment programme that will bring about “the most significant urban transformation Alhaurín el Grande has seen in many years”.

The Mayor reiterated that the local government’s vision for the municipality is based on creating modern, well-maintained public spaces designed around people’s needs, while promoting high-quality urban development that fosters social interaction, sustainability and economic growth.

Finally, Bermúdez acknowledged the work carried out by municipal technical staff and by the Public Works and Economic Development departments, whose contribution has been essential both to the design of the project and to securing the European funding that will make the initiative a reality.
